Week 5 - Powerpoint Reflection

What is it?

Powerpoint is the go-to presentation graphics program. It has been around since 1989 and has been a staple tool in the Windows Office toolbox since then. It has evolved into a presentation tool that now allows for text, audio, video and images to be added as well as providing the user with the ability to animate them. I have created my own Powerpoint presentation about Nouns. When embedding it into my blog the animations, audio and video I added in were lost. I had an audio file on page 1 of someone saying "woohoo!!" and made the text in the speech bubbles on page 2, question mark on page 3 and the photos on page 5 appear one at a time with animations such as fly in, appear, fade and swivel. On page 4 I added a video from youtube which was a great song about nouns. I have embedded the noun video below my slideshare presentation.

I found Powerpoint very simple and easy to use as I class myself as a Digital Native when it comes to using this software. I have used it for presentations since I was in primary school. Because of this, I know that I will definitely be using Powerpoint during my teaching. It is a hassle free, simple and easy tool to use for both learners and teachers. With the addition of animations, video and audio I could do a whole lesson using just one program.

I have created a SWOT analysis of using Powerpoint in the classroom.

Strengths
Weaknesses
  •  Easy to use
  • Accessible to anyone who has Microsoft Office
  • Is not an online program so is somewhat less susceptible to ethics, safety and security threats.
  • Caters for many learning styles because of its ability to include images, videos, audio and text.
  • Can create interactive presentations such as a narrated stand-alone presentation, drag and drop activities, stop motion movies and games
  • Effective tool to use for any year level or KLA

  • Need to ensure that images, videos, audio and text are presented as part of a TPACK framework and add to the learning experience or may be distracting
  • Takes time to create a presentation
  • Students may tune out if presentation is not engaging enough
  • Presentations are not collaborative

Opportunities
Threats
  • Newest version has more interactive features than ever before. However you must be sure to use them to promote productive pedagogy
  • Presents information in a condensed bullet point form.
  • Make sure to stop and ask students questions and involve them in the presentation. Do not just speak at them.

  • Newer presentation tools such as Prezi and Glogster were designed for today’s classroom i.e to be used on interactive whiteboards
  • Teacher needs to extend teaching past using just Powerpoint to present information. Needs to be used in conjunction with other software programs.

The slideshow presentation below outline some of the ways teachers can use Powerpoint to promote productive pedagogy in the classroom

Remember..

Using Powerpoint in the classroom has the same basic Ethics, Safety and Security considerations as all e-learning tools. However, as Powerpoint is not an online tool it is not susceptible to many online threats such as privacy and security issues as it is not available online (unless uploaded to a site such as slideshare). It has its own royalty free images and illustrations so the user can be sure that the images used are not breaching any copyright laws.
